Ranjit was under the impression that the 1996 World Cup final was affected by rain, and decided based on D/L. How he fails to remember such a memorable final, until the other guy corrects him, I don't know.
Another thing pointed out by SG:
"In the Final yesterday, Australia were cruising along and it was the end of the 33rd over. Aussies were 237 at that stage and were in full flourish with 5 overs remaining. Enter Ranjit Fernando; he says Australia will look for something around 260 !?!?!? Even singles would have gotten them more than that. Does this guy really have any cricketing sense at all?"

Believe me i heard both the points you mentioned here... I wondered how could a Sri Lankan forget about 1996 finals. This guy really said 1996 win was decided on D/L rule and after about 5 seconds he corrected it. And when he said the Aussies would look for around 260 when they looked to score about 300, i thought this guy was literally crazy....
Check out the following comment from the Cricinfo live commentary (from http://content-sl.cricinfo.com/wc2007/engine/current/match/247507.html?innings=2;view=commentary)
"Ranjit Fernando has just come up with another howler on TV, his 532nd of the competition, claiming Sri Lanka won the World Cup in 1996 on Duckworth-Lewis. Even Botham sounded as if he had had enough ..."
he also said there were 11 billion people who were hoping Jayasuriya would fire, 11 billion...what a dumb, pathetic excuse for a commentator...
yeah, that's right, I was in a drowsy state having not slept all night (in Aus), and towards the end of the match RF was talking something about a D/L during the '96 world cup. I was totally confused! I couldn't figure out what he was talking about. The man is seriously mad! How could an international commentator make such a pathetic mistake! and about his own country too! It's good that we Sri Lankans know, but it's more than enough to confuse and mislead a fan who's not that familiar with the sport.
This is no joke, the man must go.
It's better not to have any commentator from SL, than to have one who only damages our reputation.
So if we can get someone to replace him, that's good. And I'm sure some new talent will surface once there is an opportunity. And until he's doing all commentaries, there will be no room for any newcomers.
Our man was in fine form yesterday. Apart from the infamous D/L incident, according to him the fact that Mahela didn't know what score to chase was a "bazaar" situation.
I was going to leave these comments in the immediate aftermath of the events of the 28th morning...having left the SSC at around 1am seeing our world cup dreams turn to ashes, only to return home to hear the explosions...one nation united by cricket?...yeah right.
Then comes along that CRETIN Ranjit Fernando rubbing salt into Sri Lankan wounds with his "Sri Lanka won the World Cup under the Duckworth/Lewis system" blunder.
ONE COULD excuse his mistaking players names (ala BOPARA Fernando, Chamara DE SILVA, Romesh KALUWTHANA) & mistaking wickets for 4's, maybe even laugh at them...But what he said that night was an INSULT to our Country, an INSULT to our team(past & present),& an INSULT to the memory of every Sri Lankan who has the '96 moment of victory etched in our mind...Every Sri Lankan EXCEPT Ranjit Fernando,BECAUSE HE IS NOT A SRI LANKAN,HE IS AN EMBARRASSMENT & HE DOES NOT REPRESENT US.
We may not be as fanatical as Indian Cricket Fans who burn their players houses...But Ranjit Fernandos' House should at least be "Egged".
Better still, his Citizenship should be revoked. Maybe then he can be naturalized by the "Sudda" countries he Salivates after. Then he would be their problem & not ours anymore.
Cheers for y'all for starting up something like this. Ranjith is the worst commentator the game of cricket has ever witnessed. And I do hope someday Ranjith gets to see this blog.
Well, let me point out yet another blunder made by our guy in semi finals.
When Chamara Silva and Dilshan were handed out raw deals by the umpires, RF had his head up his own ass so deep that he was not able to air one single word against it. But, when Stephen Fleming was plumb out for a Malinga sizzler, RF claimed he heard two noises. Even without slow motion re-plays one can see Fleming did not judge the line of the delivery and his bat was nowhere near the ball. But this blind bat heard two noises. Well, one noise was the ball thudding into Fleming's pads. Any guesses on what the second noise was? (My take is, RF may have had a sudden fart at the sight of how his masters are folding out meekly)
Ranjit Fernando has been an embaressment to Sri Lankans right throughout the world cup - but the blunder about "Sri Lanka winning the 96 world cup by the Duckworth Lewis system" is totally and completely unforgivable. There is no excuse for such a huge blunder. It is an insult to all Sri Lankans. He defintely owes the 96 Cricket Team in particular and the Sri Lankan nation in general an apology for making such an irresponsible statement. I am very proud to be a Sri Lankan after how well our team played in the world cup this year - the only person who has brought our country shame and embarressment is Ranjit Fernando.
Ranjit Fernando has been a source of embaressement throughout the world cup but the final straw was the blunder he made during the finals when he said Sri Lanka won the 96 world cup by the Duckworth Lewis system. How a "Sri Lankan" can make such a grave mistake and not even realise it until pointed out by a fellow non-Sri Lankan commentator is a mystery. He owes the Sri Lankan cricket loving nation in general and the 96 world cup cricket squad in particular an apology for this insult brought on by his thoughtless, factless yammering! This year our team brought our country pride by the way they performed during the world cup - but Ranjit Fernando has brought us nothing but shame and embaressment.
He's a traitor - I am sure he has been planted by the LTTE to discredit our blessed nation- I sincerely hope that the authorities launch an investigation into any links ASAP.
I agree with the Anonymous comment on April 29, 2007 7:01 PM. It's better to have nobody from Sri Lanka than this idiot. The likes of Manjrekar or Rameez Raja would represent better than this man...
yeah, i also heard his "bazaar" comment, I was just not sure whether I heard it correctly (due to lack of sleep). So far the only credit towards RF was that he can speak proper English, but now it seems that he's not even capable of doing that. Or maybe he was just trying to sound posh, saying 'bazaar' instead of 'bizzare'.
Ranjit is a blind bat! during the final Jayasuriya hit the ball and it was running halfway down the ground towards the boundary, but the ball was moving so slow that any idiot would have felt that a fielder would get to it before it gets to the boundary. But leave it to this so experienced Ranjit 'stupid' fernando to say "that's a boundary" !@#T!&^!
Hasn't he been watching cricket matches for decades? Can't he pick out a ball that's going for a boundary? A 5 year old could do that!
Can someone upload some of RF's audio clips somewhere on the Net and send us the URL?
This guy is a serious disgrace. What must people in the world think of sri lankans after listening to this nonsense.
During the final he was going on the jaya has the support of '10 to 12 billion people' - what is he thinking??? Maybe he was counting animals and aliens too...
Guys, just be thankful that the ordeal has ended. It gives me shivers to think how those close to him have to put up with him the next few days listening to "ONE must say it was a VALIANT effort by the Sri Lankans but they were completely BAMBOOZELED by the mighty Australians bla, bla bla"
The guy brings a brand new meaning for the term "his masters voice".
As most people here say, I also think he must be a real gentleman in his personal life. But Mr. Ranjit, you dont match in the commentry box. When you sit among brilliant commentators like Richie Benaud, Tony Greig etc, the world expects you to match their competency level. Sad to say, you dont fit in the job you do right now.
Maybe you should take over duties of the announcer in Fort Railway station. There you dont have to use your brain (err .. never mind) but just have to read an announcement. But again, you might end up saying something like "one can see the train approaching on line 3 might end up in platform 3".
hahahha!
Mike, that's a cracker!
yeah he will announce the 'obvious' using the probable words like 'might', 'could' etc
Have u guys noticed he always use those words, just so that he's not commited to any statement he makes...
RF is preoccupied in his commentaries. One might feel that he learns idioms, phrases, etc. at home to be used next day irrespective of the situation on the field. He just wants batsmen to "have butterflies in the stomach" when they see Lasith Malinga for the simple reason that he learnt it by heart the previous night. Sometimes I feel that RF is using idioms from Tin Tin and Asterix cartoon books. One must see his luggage when he travels if those books are hidden in the luggages.
Yesterday when I was watching ESPN, in an interview, Duleep Mendis, CEO & Thilanga Sumithipala - President, BCCSL, said that they will appoint Ranjit Fernando as the manager of the next SL series.
Whaaaat?????
Manager of the next SL series?
Pleease tell me you are joking!
If that happends I'm going to get down to the streets and do a hunger strike!
I think that's a good move. At least this will keep him away from the commentry box. Let's be selfish in this issue. If he becomes the manager, only about 15-20 people have to suffer through meetings and in the dressing room. But if he gets hold of the microphone, how many will suffer? According to great RF himself, there are 12 Billion people out there watching when our team is batting. Well, my take is SLC have done its maths and come up with a solution, which will make the world a better place.
Now after all you seriously can't expect an expert commentator like RF to give up his job and become a hairdresser overnight eh? It has to be gradual.
as everone said someone have chase him out from the commontrator post its really annoying this bugger is damages sri lankan reputation.
note: hey people have noticed???? if this idiot ranjith cimes to commentrate the sri lankan bats man will get out, i have noticed this for several times, sri lankan crecket board shout take neccesery action to fire him. RANJITH U SUCKS MAN. PLS GO AND GIVE COMMENTRY FOR NETBALL... I HATE HIM
RF belongs to a small clique of Kotahena Old Bens & Old Joes who used to frequent the NCC. For them the Whites, particularly the Aussies, are the 'Masters' of the game and they could do nowrong. I remember one of his group (who has now passed on) defending Daryl Hair when he maliciously "no-balled" Murali in that infamous Melbourne Test in 1995.
RF is unable to overcome a certain inferiority complex borne out of his own social background. It is sad how some people carry such a load of "baggage" all through their life and seek to destroy the reputation of the very country that has given him the opportunity, although it may have come through manipulation. His prejudice against Sri Lanka has warped his memory of events.
I think RF needs psychiatric help.
Spot on Mike!
Let's allow the basterd to torture our dear SL cricketers for a while! After all they had such a wonderful time in WI that the change maybe welcome for them! They they'll realise there are worse things than Gilchrist scoring a century against SL in a WC Final!!! LOL.
